A primary portrait of the Queen of Motown, Diana Ross. The background of the  portrait references 36 queens referenced in popular culture. Each piece in the series also references fine artists from past and present.  Diana’s hair is a kaleidoscopic homage to African American Artist Karen Walker and the layout of the piece references the style of pop icon Peter Blake.

      QUEEN

Although googling “Queen” yields 1000’s of examples and I believe that their no longer exists a hierarchy in the idea, definition or example of “Queen”, I do believe that there is value in identifying and celebrating “Queen” iconography within a particular community, profession, or history. For this particular piece I chose 36 Queens from history ,science and pop culture. They include: Elizabeth, Chess Piece, Latifah, Kong, Dairy, Mary, Drama, Dancing, Nefertiti, Bee, Scream, Mean and 24 other references.
